Robin may be coming to the big screen sooner rather than later, with fresh whispers emerging that the character will make an appearance in The Batman before jumping to a solo Nightwing film. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, the character also known as Dick Grayson debuted on the pages of Detective Comics #38 back in 1940. In 1984, however, he opted to define himself out from within Batman’s considerable shadow. As a result, he assumed his own vigilante persona named Nightwing. That particular journey is currently being explored on the DC Universe series Titans.

Also emerging from the imaginations of Finger and Kane, Bruce Wayne first appeared in 1939. With the character’s 80th anniversary being celebrated this year, he’s endured as one of the most popular and iconic characters in all of comics. As such, he’s been adapted for screens both big and small by a myriad of actors. The cape and cowl were most recently worn in theaters by Ben Affleck. He prominently played the role in both Batman v Superman and Justice League, while also having a brief cameo in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Though he was previously attached to co-write, direct, and star in a standalone outing, those plans fell through. Warner Bros. then opted to return to the character’s younger days and a more noir tone - with Robert Pattinson ultimately winning the coveted role.

Written and directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is rumored to be based on Jeph Loeb’s Long Halloween storyline. As such, it’s expected to feature a whole host of villains from Batman’s extensive rogue’s gallery. Jonah Hill is reportedly in talks to play either The Penguin or The Riddler. Meanwhile, casting news for Catwoman, Two-Face, and more will apparently not be too far behind. According to Forbes, it won’t just be foes but also members of the extended Bat-Family that join Pattinson’s Batman debut. The outlet reports that they’ve heard rumblings that Dick Grayson will make an appearance, possibly as an origin story. It remains unclear, however, whether that potential story will be a part of the main plot or be merely a subplot.

Whatever the case, the news lines up with the recently-announced fact that The Batman will tie-in directly with the Batgirl movie. The latter was initially set to be written by Joss Whedon before he stepped away. Batgirl has since remained firmly in limbo - though Warner Bros recently prioritized finding a new director. A number of people have already expressed an interest in the role, including The Politician actress Zoey Deutch. The role of Dick Grayson was previously played by Chris O’Donnell in the extremely-mixed Batman Forever and the utterly lambasted Batman & Robin.

Despite the oft-mocked representation of the character, he’s remained hugely popular - with fans ever-eager to see him (especially in his Nightwing persona) done justice on the big screen. This news, therefore, will undoubtedly be met with a wave of cheers. It’s unclear how far away an official casting announcement is, but fans will probably busy themselves with debate and speculation as to who could (and should play him). Equally, they’ll have Brenton Thwaites suiting up as the hero on Titans to tide them over until further details for The Batman inevitably emerge.
