Artists have added ears to the cowl of the recently revealed Batman costume, worn by Robert Pattinson in director Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The costume was teased in a video released by the director, who co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin. Anticipation for the film is at an all-time high since filming began on January 27, 2020, in London.

The short screen test didn’t reveal much other than a chest-up glimpse of Pattinson in the costume. The shot is tightly framed so viewers only get to see the bottom half of the cowl, leaving many to wonder how the cowl’s ears are designed. Throughout Batman’s 81-year history many artists have drawn the cowl’s ears differently. The two most extreme examples are Dick Sprang’s work in the Golden and Silver Age, and Kelley Jones’ over-the-top take from the ’90s.

Several artists have now imagined what Pattinson’s Batman cowl could look like in full. Concept artist for Ubisoft, Aboy Ningthouja shared his work in a private Facebook group called “Let Your Geek Sideshow,” the official group for “superfans” of Sideshow Collectables studio. Ningthouja’s version of the cowl is similar to artist Jerry Robinson’s take on the character, or as a slightly less curved version of Bruce Timm’s designs from Batman: The Animated Series. It’s unclear when to can expect to see more of the new Batman costume, but considering the film has been shooting exteriors in London it’s possible the actor might be snapped by paparazzi while filming. It’s likely that the screen test was released to allow the filmmakers to get ahead of any leaked set photos. With The Batman not due in theaters until June 25, 2021, there’s still a long wait ahead before even a proper trailer is released.
