In recent years, The CW has proven itself a hot bed for comic book-inspired fare, stacking its TV slate with shows like the Vertigo-adapted iZombie and its multi-pronged DC Universe of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. In January, it introduced yet another page-to-screen adaption with Riverdale, a dark soap that toes the line between steamy teen drama and Twin Peaks-esque whodunit.
Based on the iconic, ’40s-launched Archie comics, the series is driven by the murder of Jason Blossom, an affluent, porcelain-skinned high schooler whose mysterious death hangs over Archie and his crew. But Riverdale has buried plenty of other secrets beneath its brooding, small town surface. Veronica’s mom is still tying up her father’s shady business while he serves time behind bars, Betty’s sister, Polly, is pregnant with Jason’s baby, and Jughead is battling homelessness while he grapples with his father’s alcoholism. But in Riverdale, secrets don’t stay secrets for long, and in last week’s episode, “In A Lonely Place,” Jughead finally fessed up to his BFF Archie about his living situation.
When the show returns March 30 for “Chapter Eight: The Outsiders,” it seems Jughead’s problem won’t be the only one coming to a head. The promo teases an episode propelled by family feuds, and the description promises confrontation, gang fights, and one very tense baby shower. As the official synopsis reads:
Knowing Betty, Veronica, and the like, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be nothing but supportive of Jughead, especially now that he’s staying with Archie. The bigger conflict, then, seems to be that his dad is a member of the Serpents, and his ties to Jason’s death remain suspicious. At the end of “In A Lonely Place,” it was revealed that he had stowed Jason’s letterman jacket in his closet, which hints that he’s the one who burned the car Betty and Jughead found across the river. It immediately paints him as a potential killer, so it will be interesting to see how Jughead navigates his loyalties to both his friends and his father, as they’re clearly on opposite sides. If the season thus far is any indication, “The Outsiders” will offer more questions than answers, but it will certainly be jaw-dropping.
As Fred (Luke Perry) and his crew are about to start construction he loses his crew, which could put his livelihood in jeopardy. Wanting to help his dad, Archie (KJ Apa) and his friends pitch in to help but after one of them is attacked, the gang comes up with a plan that lands them in Southside Serpent territory. With Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) secret revealed, he is worried about how his friends will react. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) suggest throwing Polly (guest star Tiera Skovbye) a baby shower to make her feel better, but Polly is hesitant knowing how everyone feels.
Riverdale, “The Outsiders,” airs March 30 at 9.p.m. ET on the CW.
