[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Riverdale ahead.]

-

Jason Blossom’s killer will finally be revealed, as confirmed by the trailer for next week’s episode of Riverdale. This week’s installment in The CW’s ongoing TV reimagining of the Archie Comics, titled ‘Chapter Eleven: To Riverdale and Back Again’, saw Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) father FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich) arrested and charged with the killing of the Blossom’s son. However, having quietly searched FP’s trailer-park home earlier in the episode, Archie (K.J. Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) quickly deduce that the evidence used to get FP arrested was planted in order to frame him for Jason’s murder.

Riverdale’s season 1 finale synopsis promises that the reveal of Jason’s killer is far from the end of Archie and his friends’ problems, but first we have to find out who murdered Jason to begin with - not to mention, why they did the crime. While the trailer for next week’s episode, titled ‘Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder’, obviously doesn’t give away that secret, it does allude to some suspects in the Jason Blossom murder case; at the same time, confirming that there is irrefutable proof (namely, video footage) that shows who Jason’s killer really is.

The CW’s trailer for ‘Anatomy of a Murder’ - another Riverdale episode subtitle to reference a famous, pulpy crime/Noir film (here, Otto Preminger’s 1959 classic Anatomy of a Murder) - further teases an episode that payoffs dangling plot threads and questions raised earlier this season. Among other things, it appears that ‘Anatomy of a Murder’ will reveal the secrets of both the Cooper and Blossom parents, concerning their own knowledge (or lack thereof) of Jason’s death.

Like its episode subtitles, Riverdale continues to wear its crime/Noir drama influences on its sleeve, with respect to its ever-twisting narrative, its Noir themes (exposing the dark truth beneath Riverdale’s outward, friendly facade) and even its strikingly cold color palette. These elements, combined with the series’ take on the teen soap operatics of the Archie Comics and characters, have earned the show a loyal fanbase, steady ratings and second season from The CW so far.

Fortunately, it doesn’t sound as though Riverdale season 2 is going to rehash the successful murder mystery storyline of season 1 either, once the Jason Blossom murder has been resolved (or, rather, Jason’s killer revealed). Showrunner Robert Aguirre-Sacasa has revealed that instead, Riverdale season 2 boasts a “twist in genre element” that the season 1 finale puts into play.

Whatever that “genre twist” is (be it an Afterlife with Archie-inspired zombie element, the introduction of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and/or something else altogether), it should further help ensure that Riverdale remains as intriguing as ever, even once Jason’s killer is no longer an unknown entity on the show.

Riverdale continues with ‘Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder’ on Thursday, May 4th on The CW.
