The CW’s new drama Riverdale centers around one very big mystery. Who murdered Jason Blossom? But the town is full of mysteries and secrets. There is a ton of bad blood and history between all of the main character’s parents which is only just starting to come to light. Veronica’s father Hiram - not yet seen because he is in jail for embezzlement - is buying property in the town with the help of his wife and the mayor. Betty’s sister Polly was hidden by her parents and has now run away. And narrating us all through these events is Jughead Jones.

Jughead has a few mysteries of his own. His father is the leader of motorcycle gang, The Southside Serpents, and is clearly not raising his son right now. Jughead is homeless, he was living in the projection booth at the drive-in theater where he worked until it was closed, and now it is not known where he lives. As for Jughead’s mother, and his little sister Jellybean, he’s never said where they are or what happened to them.

According to the promo for next week’s episode ‘Chapter Seven: In a Lonely Place’ - seen above - some of the mysteries surrounding Jughead are going to be addressed. It look like his father is back, and struggling with alcoholism. It also would appear that while Jughead is choosing not to live with his Dad, he hasn’t given up on the idea of his father turning things around and letting them be a family again. It’s the closing moments of the promo that really make things look bad for Jughead, he is brought to the police station and asks for a lawyer, never a good sign. This is also backed up by the episode’s official description:

HE SEARCH IS ON — When a major piece of evidence is mysteriously destroyed, new rumors begin to swirl as to who was really behind Jason’s murder. Tensions build when Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) father returns to the fray and it’s revealed that he and Fred (Luke Perry) have some unresolved issues between them. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) takes matters into her own hands after her fight with Hermione (Marisol Nichols). Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) approaches Betty (Lili Reinhart) with an unexpected proposal that leaves Betty torn. KJ Apa and Madchen Amick also star.

Allison Anders directed the episode written by Aaron Allen (#107). Original airdate 3/9/2017.

The tension between Jughead and Archie’s fathers is shown for a brief second in the ‘In a Lonely Place’ trailer. The elder Jones used to work for Fred Andrews until he was fired for stealing, but it looks like there may be even more bad blood between them.

As for the missing evidence, that could refer to Jason’s car, which Jughead and Betty found in the previous episode. They told Sheriff Keller, but by the time the police got there the car was on fire, probably due to whoever was spying on Jughead and Betty when they found it. It looks like the narrator of Riverdale will finally be getting the spotlight, whether he wants it or not.

Riverdale continues on The CW with ‘In a Lonely Place’ on Thursday, March 9 at 9 pm.
