John Boyega just leaked the text crawl for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, or at least a fake version as a prank on the internet. The sequel trilogy co-star decided to have some fun on social media earlier today, posting a parody of the classic Star Wars opening in the lead-up to the release of the latest and final installment of The Skywalker Saga this weekend.
Boyega, who plays failed First Order solider-turned Resistance hero Finn in the latest three Star Wars films, is no stranger to horsing around with the fanbase. Bearing a longtime love of the franchise, he’s been known to post funny videos of himself reacting to a new trailer or hanging out with fellow cast member BB-8 on Instagram. Boyega’s also appeared in trailers for 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II and has talked about which other games based on the galaxy far, far away he’s enjoyed. So yes, John Boyega is very much one with the Star Wars community, even if he’s willing to speak his mind about its less-than-positive aspects on occasion.
Boyega’s recent video, which was posted on his Instagram page, starts out like a normal Star Wars text crawl, describing “a period of turmoil” as the classic John Williams score plays. Suddenly, it cuts to a rap number, and the text is covered by multiple images of Boyega dancing in comical fashion. What remains of the crawl assures fans that it isn’t the real one, which they are still going to have to wait a few days for. The video ends with both Boyega and the text blasting off into hyperspace. Check out Boyega’s fake Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker crawl below:
Boyega won over Star Wars fans with his portrayal of Finn in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, telling the tale of a well-meaning Stormtrooper who saw the evil he was a part of and sought to redeem himself as a member of the Resistance. This story continued in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in which he and newcomer Rose went on a search for a Master Codebreaker on Canto Bight. Finn also finally had a much-hoped-for battle against his former commanding officer, Captain Phasma, realizing what it meant to truly fight for something worthwhile in the process. Fans, and Boyega himself, had their share of misgivings on how Finn’s arc was handled in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but he is set to return for one final battle against the First Order in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Regardless of the misdirect, seeing this fun little video does put a smile on one’s face. Boyega’s goofiness is nothing short of endearing here, and it’s certainly nice to see someone who has worked hard for the past five years on a franchise he and many people love having a bit of fun before the culmination of that effort is released to the world. Fans can’t wait to see more of Boyega, as well as what becomes of Finn, when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters nationwide this Friday.
