Netflix releases the action-packed Rim of the World trailer. Directed by McG, the science fiction adventure film blends summer camp camaraderie with an alien invasion storyline. The screenplay was written by Zack Stentz, who previously co-wrote the films Thor and X-Men: First Class, along with four episodes of The CW’s superhero series The Flash.
In Rim of the World, four misfit teenagers meet at the titular summer camp. Given the location, they’re at a disadvantage when aliens invade, thus forcing them to think out of the box. The kids receive a special key that will allow them to potentially end the invasion, but they must first embark on a journey without any parental help or adult supervision. Rim of the World stars Jack Gore, Benjamin Flores Jr., Miya Cech, and Alessio Scalzotto as the protagonists, with Lynn Collins, Annabeth Gish, and Aquaman’s Michael Beach appearing in supporting roles.
Netflix released a trailer for Rim of the World. The clip begins with a wide shot that shows a Los Angeles skyline full of smoke, with the main characters realizing that “everybody’s gone.” Next, a brief montage takes the audience back in time, as the protagonists arrive at summer camp and explore the surrounding woods with new friends. Suddenly, bright lights appear in the sky and objects then zoom across a lake at Rim of the World. By this point, the character dialogue aligns with that of Stranger Things, while the visuals tease a supernatural outdoor experience, with a “CryptoKey” representing the only way to stop the alien invasion. In the trailer’s second half, the misfits encounter military figures and prepare for a 70-mile trek to a government facility. Near the end, Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain” drives the trailer’s score, while the film’s heroes drive to save the world, via a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, and encounter a variety of obstacles along the way. Rim of the World marks the eighth feature film for McG, who made his debut with the 2000 franchise film Charlie’s Angels, which preceded the 2003 follow-up Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. In recent years, McG has produced the Netflix films When We First Met and I Feel Pretty, this coming after he produced and directed the 2017 teen horror comedy The Babysitter. Prior to McG’s feature film career, he directed numerous rock music videos and co-wrote Sugar Ray’s 1997 hit single “Fly.”
Based on Rim of the World’s trailer, it appears to include numerous coming-of-age action-adventure tropes. But with McG directing and working off a script from Stentz, audiences can expect a high-quality production, one that will undoubtedly lead to more Netflix opportunities for the young stars.
