Almost all popular messaging apps offer link previews, which let users know the content of a URL in advance. However, security researchers Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk have discovered that these link previews can expose user data in both iOS and Android apps. When you send any link through a messaging app like Messenger, WhatsApp, and even iMessage, the app generates a preview of that link which usually contains an image, title, and sometimes a short text....

Apple appears to be retiring the built-in Videos app on iOS in favor of the new TV app coming next month. The behavior is introduced with today’s iOS 10.2 beta 3; iOS 10.2 beta 2 included both apps separately. Apple could still change this behavior in a future version of iOS 10.2, although there isn’t much need for both apps for most users. The change should only be present for iOS 10....

CNN today reports that while the FBI did not find anything new on the San Bernardino iPhone 5c that it unlocked without Apple’s help, it has “produced data the FBI didn’t have before.” Essentially, not finding anything new on the device is what the FBI needed to know in order to answer some of its remaining questions regarding the case. What are packed executables? It’s an executable that has been compressed firstly to minimize its file size, but often to complicate the reversing process. Not to be confused with standard compressions (rar/zip). Packed executables are standalone files that can be executed while still compressed. A packer uses standard compression techniques (LZO, LZMA, …) on the file; of course, the OS won’t recognize these code modifications, but the packer appends an unpacking routine to the executable....
