A new clinical observation study published today by Nature Biotechnology (via The Verge) includes findings from an asthma test based on Apple’s ResearchKit framework. The asthma app relies on the iPhone app to voluntarily collect information, and the published study shows that such an approach can produce results. While the study being published demonstrates how Apple’s ResearchKit framework can support apps for clinical observation in the real world, the study does highlight challenges created by this method as well....

Earlier this week we showcased a new MacBook Pro Touch Bar app called TouchSwitcher that allowed users to easily switch between running apps via shortcuts in the Touch Bar. Just over a week ago, the FBI revealed that it had successfully unlocked the iPhone 5c used by one of the San Bernardino gunmen without the help of Apple. To this day, the FBI has not publicly disclosed the method it used to gain access, and it’s unclear if it ever will. The National Journal, however, reports today that the FBI has been briefing members of the Senate on how it was able to gain access to the locked iPhone....

Following several reports from earlier this week claiming Apple’s much rumored free, ad-supported radio service would be tightly integrated with its iAd business, AdAge claims to have more details on how ads will work in the service. Random House Digital launched their first original game app today: Catch the Berry. In this physics-based puzzle game, mystical creatures called the Telfnords harvest and collect magical berries. The object of the game is to catch the berries and gems in the Telfnords’ basket using your knowledge of gravity, velocity, and acceleration. To catch berries, the user draws lines anywhere on the screen to impact the trajectory of the berry. The lines can be straight, curved, or even have gaps in between them....

Back in December I reviewed the Photofast iType-C thumb drive, the first MFi thumb drive we’ve seen that includes Lightning, USB-C, USB-A, and micro-USB in a single device. That makes transferring files between iPhone and iPad and your various other devices like computers, drones and cameras a lot easier. According to both CNET and VentureBeat, Apple’s new iPad won’t be officially called “iPad 3,” but rather “iPad HD.” The “HD” suffix is a nod to the new iPad biggest upgrade: the high-definition Retina Display.
