We’ve reviewed and enjoyed a number of TwelveSouth products over the years. A new report out of The Information this evening outlines more details concerning Apple’s efforts when it moves to securing original content rights. The report, which reiterates some of what we already knew concerning Apple’s efforts, focuses on the company’s reserved and “quixotic” attitudes… Spearheading Apple’s original video content efforts at this point are Apple Music executives Jimmy Iovine, Larry Jackson, and Robert Kondrk. This is somewhat notable as it suggests that Apple doesn’t necessarily have a full team working on its video efforts at this point, though it is in the process of developing a reality series called Planet of the Apps that’s focused on the app economy....

As Apple’s former retail chief Ron Johnson sets its sights on re-inventing the shopping experience at the J.C. Penney department stores and the search for his replacement continues, the Cupertino, California-headquartered gadget designer isn’t resting on its laurels. Future plans call for continuation of an aggressive retail expansion that includes 40 new stores during fiscal 2012, thirty of them outside the United States. With holidays just around the corner, third-party retailers such as Best Buy are already luring would-be shoppers with attractive discounts on Apple gear....

Using our voice to control computers has never really taken off. For many of us, using voice recognition technology wasn’t even a consideration until features like dictation and Siri arrived on our iPhones and iPads. There’s good reason too: the voice recognition features built into our devices have always had the reputation of being half-baked. They simply aren’t accurate and consistent enough to replace our tried and trusted mouse and keyboard or touchscreen....

For the past couple of weeks, I have been testing a new MacBook stand called the Kickflip. I’ve used some of the more high-end stands for my laptop in the past as it improves the ergonomics involved with keyboard typing and because it improves the cooling of the computer. This new Kickflip is not stationary like some other stands on the market, but it is an accessory that sticks to the bottom of your laptop....

I have to start with the last point first. Only two weeks ago, I was pronouncing the £300-ish LG-made Google Nexus 5 as superb value for money – which it still is, considering the almost flagship specifications. Yet the Motorola Moto G, also running what is effectively stock Android, makes the Nexus 5 look overpriced. Which is – as I say – astonishing. Quite how the Moto G makes the Galaxy S4s and HTC Ones of this world look, with their near £500 starting prices, I leave to your own imagination and hyperbole....

When you live in Finland, you take connectivity for granted. My unlimited 4G LTE connection costs 20 Euros ($27) a month and consistently gives me 35 megabits per second down. My girlfriend’s father has a fiber connection to his house that gives him gigabit access for just 10 Euros more. However, I spent the first three months of this year backpacking through Asia, and when I was lucky enough to find an internet connection, I often had to deal with a one or two megabit line....

Many iPad keyboard cases have hit the market in recent weeks and we finally got our hands on ZAGG’s ZAGGMate iPad keyboard case for review… and it’s awesome. The ZAGGMate is an iPad keyboard accessory at heart but doubles as a case. The case aspect of the ZAGGMate is not fantastic but the keyboard part may just be the best third-party implementation we’ve seen. Although believed by many to be closely associated (OnePlus’ founders come from Oppo, and OnePlus device boxes in India carry “manufactured by Oppo” tags), both brands have generally stayed out of each other’s way in the Indian market, although both have been there for a while now. OnePlus has always been the budget flagship (of “flagship killer”) available almost exclusively online while Oppo has tended to focus on more conventional offline retail and generally higher price tags....

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page are reportedly in talks regarding mobile patent disputes between the companies. According to Reuters, which cited “people familiar with the matter,” both chiefs spoke on the phone last week while more discussions between “lower-level officials” are also underway: The two companies are keeping the lines of communication open at a high level against the backdrop of Apple’s decisive legal victory in a patent infringement case against Samsung, which uses Google’s Android software....

When taking on the role of Elton John in musical biopic Rocketman, the singing came easily to star Taron Egerton, who actually performed “Your Song” as his audition piece for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Egerton sings all of the songs in the movie, sometimes joined by his co-stars.
